Welcome to the College Corner! My name is Ms. Chelsea Althouse and I am the College Counselor here at AECI. I have been in the field of college access for seven years, from my own admissions office at the University of Tampa, to a formal counselor at SUNY Maritime College. I hold a bachelor of science in education and a master of arts in school counseling.
I first found interest as a student, working as a public relations assistant in the admissions office. While obtaining my degree in education, I found the college process increasingly more interesting and assisting students, more rewarding. After graduation, I pursued a career in admissions, recruiting students from a variety of high schools, reviewing a plethora of essays and transcripts to finally rendering decisions on applications. Through my experience, I found that guiding students through the college search and decision process was far more gratifying than simply deciding eligibility.
Now, working on the other side of the desk, I have an opportunity to work with students even more closely through their college process. At AECI, we start the conversation early. Starting in 9th grade, students will work to develop their resumes and study skills while also traveling to a variety of colleges in the tristate area. Here, we work as a team. Counselors, students and families are expected to contribute to the discussion of college access and enrollment. In junior and senior year, students will work with me very closely through their College Readiness courses, as we dissect the components of the college search, applications and decisions, piece by piece. My job here is to help our students prepare to succeed in a college that best suits their academic, personal and financial interests.
I am more than prepared and happy to assist students in this great adventure they are about to embark on. I look forward to the opportunity to get to know our students more closely and guide them to the great futures they deserve!
